Hathaway’s legacy continues to be a focus of the race portion of the program, honoring his 46 years of service as a teacher and coach in Perry Township. Coach Hathaway ran 131 marathons, many half-marathons, and countless other races. At age 79, he was the oldest finisher at the inaugural Running South event in 2011. Hathaway passed away in 2012.

Homecroft Kindergarten Academy teacher, Susan D. Thomas, is an October 2022 Helping Hand Grant recipient. Her project was to create a pumpkin patch! “Many of our students do not have that opportunity. On October 28th we would like to set up pumpkin patches for our students as we celebrate Pumpkin Day…” “Students will go to their classroom pumpkin patch to “pick” a pumpkin. During the day students will learn about the life cycle of a pumpkin, write about their pumpkin, learn pumpkin vocabulary, measure and weigh their pumpkin, and much more! At the end of the day, students will take their pumpkin home!”

Don’t we all agree that among the really important keys to our children’s success is a quality education? This is why the Perry Township Education Foundation has been serving the Perry Township Public Schools since 1994. Our mission is simple: Raise funds to provide creative classroom grants to exceptional teachers, so they can continue the tradition of excellence in our schools.
In fact, the Foundation has funded over $1,200,000 in grants since 1994. We are quite proud of our efforts and the positive impact those grants had on our students. We may be providing the funding, but the creativity, commitment, and success of the teachers make our efforts so worthwhile! They deserve our thanks and praise for their dedication to our kids.
The Foundation is always looking for folks to assist us in our mission by sharing their time, talents, and treasures. The Perry Township Education Foundation is pleased to announce a fresh new logo and look and a brand new website to be released this fall! Executive Director Hannah Dale states, “After 22 years of serving Perry Township Schools, it was time to refresh our look in order to reflect our mission of giving creative and innovative educator grants to the staff of Perry Township Schools. We want to make sure our logo and website adequately reflect the passion we have for our schools, staff, and students.”
With the help of Jackson Sky Web Design and Development, the Perry Township Education Foundation has been able to go on a journey to better develop tools that will help share its message with schools, supporters, and the community. The new logo utilizes the township’s prominent colors, red and blue, along with wings depicting the township’s two mascots, the Cardinal and Falcon. The new website will be much more interactive for visitors and will share recent news, event information and registration, along with specific profiles highlighting the grants currently being utilized within the school system. Giving will also be available along with links to social media platforms.
The Perry Township Education Foundation is a grant making organization that raises funds to support innovative and creative programs that enhance learning throughout Perry Township schools. Founded in 1994, the Foundation has proudly funded $1.2 million in grants that have impacted countless students and staff members through the years!

You help make memories that stick and develop a sense of community within our schools. Perry Township Education Foundation helps to fund what doesn’t fit into a traditional budget but is what my principal calls the ‘glue.’ A great example of this is when the Foundation funded our inspiration to begin a Reading Madness Month where our school focuses on fun, creative, and social ways to bring the importance of reading to the forefront, and we have so much fun with this event. Next year will be our 10th annual Reading Madness Month.
You allow us to be creative, innovative, and inspiring. For example, the Foundation funded a Wii system for our special needs classroom when we were working on a way to help them develop physical coordination.
You have helped me fund the learning dreams of so many classrooms, the library, teams, departments, clubs and school-wide programs as well as community projects. Your grants have helped me bring parents, local experts, reenactors, authors, and even horses to our school. In 2008, the Foundation funded a start-up grant, and now each semester, we host a Family Read-In event where a student and significant adult read the same book and then join us at school for an evening of book-themed games, crafts, snacks, and conversation. It’s a great way for families to reconnect to their child.
Through my relationship with the Foundation, I have brought over $87,000 in projects to my school. Often what we need, the kick-start Foundation funds provide to test out an idea we think will matter. The Foundation helped us complete our action research to learn how we could have an impact on students and reading. Through our SSR with Intervention action research, we found our students needed time to read for pleasure and to develop relationships with people around reading and adult role models who also read.
I am excited to have the Foundation’s support to start hosting science and recycling activities in the library, to help our struggling readers learn how to be better readers by becoming picture book authors and reading their self-published picture books to kids in younger grades, and to work on a school-wide community building and service learning project through a variety of educational and fun activities connected to the American Heart Association’s Hoops for the Heart program.
